One of the major changes you can make to the website, is to update the PHP Version. This gives access to the latest improvements and security patches. However, caution needs to be exercised. It is no good updating to the very latest version the day after it is released, if the rest of the website is not yet ready to work with that new version. Similarly, it is no good leaving it for ages, whilst the rest of the 'jigsaw puzzle' software advances leaving the PHP version unsupported and unable to work with the new applications that work around it.

It is quite simple to change the PHP version, either to a new version, or if all is not good, to roll back to a previous one.

From cPanel homepage, expand the Software section and select "Select PHP Version". You will see your current version and using the drop down list you can select a number of other versions. Be warned that changing the version of PHP changes it for the whole site; The Live site, Staging and the Support site.

Having changed the actual version, there may be a change to the extensions that we use. In the past we have had to enable some additional extensions. You will know you need to do this, because pages on the website will throw an error. Read the error message carefully to see what you might need to enable. Do this by ticking the box against the extension you need to enable
